The Hidden Cost of Staying on Wix, and When to Leave

The hidden cost of staying on Wix does not show up on the invoice. It appears as app subscriptions, workaround hours for missing features, and data that is hard to move out. Speed is the one to check, not assume. For a small brochure site the cost may be close to zero, so the calculation decides.

Wix limitations for business growth: three costs

Features come first. Every "Wix cannot do that" becomes an app subscription, a manual workaround, or a feature you give up. Workaround hours are payroll, even though they do not show up as a line item. Paid apps add their own subscriptions on top of the plan.

Data comes second. Wix's help center(opens in a new tab) documents a CSV export for store products, up to 5,000 rows per file, and says exporting digital products is not currently supported. Test what your own dashboard can export before you need it, because the exit gets harder as the catalog grows.

  • Features: every missing feature becomes an app subscription, a manual workaround, or a feature you give up.
  • Data: your content and customer records sit inside a platform with narrow exits.
  • Speed: check your own field data first, because the average Wix site is not slow.

Speed: check your own data before assuming

On average, Wix sites do well on Core Web Vitals. In the 2025 Web Almanac, 74 percent of Wix websites had good mobile Core Web Vitals, up from 55 percent a year earlier, against 45 percent for WordPress. Wix is not a slow platform by default, so do not count a speed cost you have not measured.

The HTTP Archive's 2025 Web Almanac CMS chapter(opens in a new tab) has the full comparison.

That chapter also shows the catch. Wix loads the most JavaScript of the platforms it lists, a median of about 1,634 KB on mobile against 638 KB for WordPress. Apps and scripts are where a Wix site can slow down, so count them, then read your own field data in Search Console.

To read the field data, see PageSpeed score 90 but Search Console flags.

When to leave Wix, and when staying makes sense

Staying is often the right decision. If the site is a brochure, traffic is modest, and growth does not depend on the website, Wix's limits are theoretical and its convenience is real. In that case the cheapest plan is to keep the site as it is and re-run the check once a year.

Businesses that pay the hidden cost are the ones whose growth quietly came to depend on the website while the platform stayed the same. Catching that drift early is what the calculation below is for.

The Wix platform page covers the limits in more detail.

Check your own numbers first

Do these steps in order before the calculation. Each produces one number or one fact, so the decision rests on your own site and not on a general claim about the platform. A month of logged hours is more reliable than an estimate from memory.

Five checks before you decide
  1. Read the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console

  2. List every app and what it costs per month

  3. Log workaround hours for one month

  4. Test an export of products and content

  5. Compare the total with a fixed migration quote

Calculating the hidden costs of Wix

Add three monthly costs: workaround hours multiplied by the loaded hourly cost, app subscriptions, and a speed term that counts only if your own field data fails. Multiply by 12 to 24 months and compare the total with the one-time migration quote.

Run the numbers with your own figures. A small total means stay, and a total that grows two quarters in a row means plan the move before a busy season forces it.

If you sell products, the Wix versus Shopify comparison covers the trade-offs.

If you decide to move, read Wix to Shopify 301 redirect checklist before you cut over.

Questions about the cost of staying on Wix

Is Wix bad for Core Web Vitals?

Not on average. In the 2025 Web Almanac, 74 percent of Wix websites had good mobile Core Web Vitals, against 45 percent for WordPress. Wix does load the most JavaScript, so check your own field data and your app count.

Can I export everything from Wix?

Wix's help center documents a CSV export for store products, up to 5,000 rows per file, and says digital products are not supported. Check what your own dashboard can export before you plan a move.

When should I leave Wix?

When the calculation total grows two quarters in a row, or when a feature you need has no app. Plan the move before a busy season forces it.

Do Wix apps cost extra?

Paid apps carry their own subscriptions on top of the plan. Add them up from your billing page when you run the calculation.

Is staying on Wix ever the right choice?

Yes. For a brochure site with modest traffic, where growth does not depend on the website, Wix's limits are theoretical and its convenience is real.
